#1000 Finches

My contribution to the Black Finch Project, started by artist Charlotte Watson on Instagram. A silent, artistic protest against the Adani Carmichael mine in the Galilee Basin, Queensland, Australia. 1000 of the estimated 1500 remaining Black-Throated Finch population will have their habitat wiped out as a result of open-cast mining for brown coal, to be exported via rail overseas. Please visit the links in the description of each image or read the press here. Watson says on her website “The Black-throated finch is representative of not only it’s own precarious position, but that of all other species currently threatened by the wider climate and biodiversity crisis. I welcome artists to share the voice of collective grief in The Black Finch Project.”

To date, over 1600 artworks have been sent from artists from Australia and overseas to key Australian politicians, in response to the extinction crisis happening to many native species.

Lying in the ashes of its own demise, the Black Throated Finch is extinguished with a simple signature on the dotted line, its fate sealed….too late to be reignited.
